In anticipation of the upcoming release (Feb 17, 2015) of “Next Year People”, Colin is sharing the song “Trying To Get To You.” Listen to the song in the player below and help share the word!
We are happy to report that Colin’s first new album in 4 years will be coming in early 2015! Titled “Next Year People” the album will be released on February 17th on Compass Records. The album is full of quizzical, curious, and cynical yet open-hearted songs with catchy melodic hooks that underscore deeply insightful lyrics. Some of the songs are based on Colin’s personal experiences such as “Waiting in the Rain,” written about his parents and the almost mystical experience he had growing up in a music shop in Scotland, surrounded by instruments and a constant stream of 50′s and 60′s radio hits.
The album’s title track, “Next Year People,” is a stand out composition – a stark but beautiful homage to the depression-era farmers who kept going by holding on to hope that next year would be better. “They kept doing the same thing and expecting a different result,” explains Colin. “I can relate, although their situation was so much more bleak.”
The album was produced by Hay and mixed by Chad Fischer (Chasing Mavericks, Ice Age 3, Lisa Loeb) and includes contributions from two young Cuban musicians, San Miguel Perez and Yosmel Montejo, both of whom recently emigrated from Havana, as well Larry Goldings on piano, Jeff Babko (Jimmy Kimmel) on B3, and Colin’s wife, vocalist Cecilia Noel.
Enjoy this medley of music from Colin Hay’s show at Largo @ the Coronet on Jun 26, 2014. Hello, from a rather blustery day in beautiful Melbourne town. I’ve been touring off and on since around 1991, making records, and trying to get them noticed. Radio airplay for new material has proved very challenging, so touring “live” has been my approach, old fashioned, quite analog, time consuming, but necessary, and effective. It is connecting, and provides nourishment for the soul. I am done for the time being. I’m going to spend next year writing and recording, and playing the odd gig here and there. I’d like to thank all those who made it out to a show, I literally couldn’t do it without you. I was going to write more, as there is so much to consider, as the sun sets on this year, but I want coffee, and that’s something that this town has down. That, and bi-polar like weather. Fantastic place.
FINDING MY DANCE
North America & UK/Australia Tour 2013
“An aboriginal man once came backstage after a show and said to me in a kindly voice, “Where’s your dance? I used to like your dance, you’ve lost your dance mate, you’ve gotta find your dance.” So, I set out in search of it, looking here, there and everywhere in all corners of the globe. Quite soon I realized that “finding my dance” is an inner search, and that whilst I may never truly find it, it matters not. What’s important is to keep searching, and in the process, refine and simplify the steps.” Colin Hay
Themes of redemption and renewal come naturally to Colin Hay, as he is in the midst of a remarkable renaissance. While his voice and visage are still familiar to millions from his tenure as front man, principal songwriter, and lead vocalist of pop sensations Men at Work (“Down Under, ” “Overkill,” “Who Can It Be Now?”), the past twenty years have found him quietly yet tenaciously re-introducing himself to new generations of fans. It has been an organic process, building momentum through constant touring, and film and television exposure.
FINDING MY DANCE is Hay’s expression for connecting with one’s authentic self. In the process, he takes the audience on a musical journey, sometimes straight down the main road, and sometimes taking the twists and turns of the road less traveled. Whether or not you have seen him before, you will laugh, you may shed a tear, but you will most certainly be more than entertained.
Hay is at the absolute peak of his craft. As a writer and vocalist, he has never been more masterful.
“Hay is funnier than most stand-up comedians, so he’ll split your sides and then drop a heartbreaking ditty on you.” The Houston Chronicle
“Hay is a consummate songwriter, who’s only gotten better and better with age.” Daytrotter, Illnois
